Scout & Morgan Books welcomes historian and filmmaker, Gary Kaunonen. Gary will share from his award-winning book, Flames of Discontent: The 1916 Minnesota Iron Ore Strike. Flames of Discontent is a working-class history of the 1916 miners’ strike in northern Minnesota. It was one of the most important events in organized labor in the early 20th century. Gary tells the story of what this crucial strike meant for workers, immigrants, mining, and labor relations in Minnesota and the nation. “Gary Kaunonen weaves his primary sources together so effectively that his readers are transported to 1916 and feel that we are listening in person to workers’ meetings, picket lines, and tavern debates. ~ Peter Rachleff, East Side Freedom Library, St. Paul
Gary Kaunonen is an independent historian of labor and immigration and a documentary filmmaker based in International Falls, Minnesota. Flames of Discontent just won the 2018 Hognander Minnesota History Award. He is also the author of Finns in Michigan along with two other award-winning books.
